Mel then attended Cal State University Fullerton, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, where he also played football and basketball.

Melvin started working for 1st Interstate Bank (AKA Wells Fargo Bank) as a banker and held banking positions for over 40 years.

He met his wife, Vicki (Tigri) Gregory, while on a bowling league. They soon began dating and, following a short courtship, they married in December, 1987, and made their home in Orange County, CA. In 1995 they moved to Beaverton, OR until they divorced in 2012. Mel and Vicki were still very close and remained this way until his passing.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and his stepson, Jim Gregory.
