Obituary
Janice Christina Kelly, 85, a resident of the St. Paul community passed away on February 3, 2023, at her home in Sunriver.
Janice was born on July 25, 1937, in Forest Grove, OR. She was the second of five children born to Henry and Lena (Cop) VanderZanden. Raised on the family dairy farm in Banks, she attended Banks High School and graduated with the Class of
1955. She then attended Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego until she married.
She met her husband, Larry Kelly, in high school, where she rejected his first proposa for marriage as a junior. Larry was luckier the second time around, and they married at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy, OR, on October 20,
1956. They made their home in the foothills of Banks where they established Kelly Farms. In 1986, they moved their farming operation to St. Paul, Oregon.
Janice was not only a loving mother and homemaker to her five children, but she was a fundamental part of the Kelly farming operation. Janice worked alongside her husband in the berry fields, and singlehandedly managed the books throughout the years. As the farming industry turned to raising grass seed, Janice went to work at kelly's Home Center in Salem, and then went on to St. Paul Ernst
Hardware store, where she remained for 18 years.
Janice embodied the spirit of wife and mother, exuding a fierce loyalty and Strength that became the backbone for the Kelly family. Her wise words and comforting personality gained her true friends and close relationships with family that she nurtured throughout life. Larry and Janice were an integral part of their community, hosting gatherings at their home, and supporting the church and local groups. Janice served on the Banks School Board for ten years and demonstrated her generosity by making crafts and baking goods for St. Francis's grade school.
She lived a life of happiness and love, enjoying entertaining family and friends, quilting, and baking with her children and grandchildren. Some of her favorite memories included the annual Kelly family hunting trip, and her and Larry's travels to Australia to visit their life-long friends.
Janice is preceded in death by her two children Kathryn Williamson and Thomas Kelly, her parents Hank and Lena, and sister, Beverly.
