Bernice E. Kindel, age 75 of Verboort died July 13, 2010, at Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Bernice was born April 9, 1935, in Dayton, Oregon to Fred and Marie (Herb) Bunker, the third of five children. The family moved to the Greenville area in 1946 amidst the smoke of the last Tillamook burn. She attended St. Francis of Assisi grade school in Roy and graduated from Banks High School in 1953.
Bernice worked as a bookkeeper for C.C. Ruth and Company from 1953 to 1957 where she met her future husband, William Kindel. They were married April 14, 1956, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Roy and moved to the Kindel family place in Verboort where she lived the rest of her life. When William and his brothers started their own business, Sunrise Seed, in 1958, her bookkeeping experience was once again called into action.
After almost ten years of marriage Bernice and William adopted their daughter, Jane, in 1965. That worked out so well, they adopted their daughter Julie in 1967. Their son Michael surprised everyone with his arrival in 1968. During Michael's high school years his closest friends, Mary Darby and Steven Stanbrough, lived with the family and she considered them her children also. Her kindness, warmth, energy, and consistently cheerful demeanor were traits her children and grandchildren will always hold as an example of how to live a good life.
Bernice tirelessly served her community as a member of Visitation Catholic Church. She volunteered as a room mother and librarian at Visitation School, as a member of the Visitation Altar Society and as Coordinator of the Visitation Parish Center from 1990 to 2010. There was no special event in Verboort that Bernice did not have a hand in. When asked how long she would continue to serve as Parish Center Coordinator she replied, “Probably until about a week after my funeral.”
Bernice was the epitome of a dedicated Catholic wife and mother. Her family was everything to her, and her thoughtful dedication made every holiday and birthday golden. Bernice loved to travel, grow roses, garden, bakes cookies with her grandchildren, and attend Little League games. She was well-known for her ability to outwork everyone else in the family, and you could always count on her to be there when there was a big job that needed to get done. In the little leisure time, she allowed herself she enjoyed genealogy, gardening, travel and caring for people were also important to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband William in 1998.
