Germaine Mary Dreiling, a longtime resident of Hillsboro, passed away on January 15, 2020 at her home. She was 91 years old. Born in 1928, Germaine was the fourth child of Henry VanDewettering a carpenter and farmer, and Catherine (Kempen) VanDeWettering a homemaker. Together, they worked in the shipyards during World War II. Germaine was raised in Verboort where she attended Dilley grade school and Visitation High School graduating with the Class of 1946.

She met her future husband, John Dreiling Sr. through mutual friends. They married on October 23, 1956 in Verboort. Following their marriage, they made their home in Hillsboro where they raised eight children. John worked for Stimson Lumber company for 32 years retiring in 1974.While their children were small, Germaine was a homemaker but during the summers she worked for Hudson House and grew tomatoes for sale at a roadside stand. Later she worked at Tetronix for many years, retiring at age 62. After John passed away on May 1, 1986 Germaine continued to live independently.

Germaine loved making quilts and was a skillful quilter for more than 30 years. She produced many hundreds of beautiful, impeccably made quilts and wall hangings for her family and friends, as well as for sale and competition. She regularly attended her Tuesday quilt club where she found inspiration and made lasting friendships. Germaine was a great conversationalist, always chatting with friends in groups or on the phone about current events and the latest gossip. For years she participated in a weekly Take Off Pounds Sensibly group which helped her stay fit and in good spirits. She enjoyed gardening throughout her life and always grew tomatoes large and small.

She is preceded in death by her son; Jerry Compton, granddaughter Catherine, six siblings; Cyril, Vern, Wayne, Clarence, and Elaine VanDewettering and Loretta Davis.

She is survived by brother Merle VanDewettering.
