Obituary

Norman Charles Hertel, 63, a resident of the Yamhill community passed away on November 27, 2020 at his home.

Norman was born on May 7, 1957 in Hillsboro, OR. He was the oldest of eight children born to Joseph and Audrey (Duyck) Hertel. He was raised on the family farm, attended St Francis of Assisi Catholic Grade School and Hillsboro High School graduating with the Class of 1975.

He met his future wife, Catherine "Cathy" Gossett, while at Mike Duycks birthday party. Norman was a senior and Cathy a junior, they courted for five years and married on May 24, 1980 at Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort. They made their home in Cornelius and Hillsboro before moving to Carlton in 1988 where they raised four children together; Michael, Matthew, Mark and Emily. They moved to Yamhill in 2006.

Norman had worked on the farm with his dad since he was a kid. Once he graduated from high school, Norman started working for Fuitens plumbing then maintenance for Claremont Foods. He was also a machinist but his biggest accomplishment in his life was raising his children. Due to his health issues Norman was "Mr. Mom" in the Hertel home. Farming was always in his blood so Norman and his family had a roadside farmer's stand in Carlton. He raised mostly berries and vegetables, giving surplus to area food banks.

When he was younger he enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors. Norman had a green thumb and loved his yard and garden and was often seen sweeping, weeding and pruning yards/churches in Yamhill, pushing his red wheelbarrow for balance. He was quiet, thoughtful, sometimes grumpy appearing but a good natured person. Cathy and Norman liked to take road trips with Cathy driving in later years and Norman telling her how to drive! He was a great cook, especially lasagna, enjoyed reading and adored his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father, Joe, nephew, Louie Hertel and in-laws Donald and Marjorie Gossett.

He is survived by his loving wife; Cathy, four children and their spouses; Michael and Carrie Hertel of Corvallis, Matthew and Jessica Hertel of Albany, Mark and Lindsay Hertel of Tualatin, Emily Howard of Spokane, His mother Audrey Hertel of Roy, seven siblings and their spouses; Carolyn and Clifford VanLoo of Gervais, Lorilee and Ken Chamberlain of Yamhill, Ron and Mary Hertel of Dallas, Tom and Sherry Hertel of Sheridan, Teresa and Don Ebel of Mankato, Minn., Fred and Julie Hertel of Dallas, James and Linda Hertel of Forest Grove, his in-laws; Chris Gossett of Beaverton, Steve and Carolyn Gossett of Cornelius, Patty and Andy Duyck of Roy, Donna and Jim Meeuwsen of Verboort, Janet Herb of Forest Grove, Julie and Randy Rettig of CA. four grandchildren; Kelsey, Ryan, Audrey and Jason and many many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and cousins.
