Obituary
Arthur “Art” Matthew Vanderzanden, 84, a resident of the Verboort community passed away on Saturday evening July 2, 2022 at his home.
Art was born on February 14, 1938 in Forest Grove, OR. He was the youngest of nine children born to William and Louise (Vandomelen) Vanderzanden. He was raised on the family farm in Verboort (On Evers Rd.) and attended Visitation Catholic Grade School and Verboort High School graduating with the Class of 1956. He was very active playing sports especially Football, baseball and basketball.
He enlisted into the US Marine Corps and served his country for two years.
He met his future wife, Patricia Unger, at a wedding dance in Banks. They soon began dating and married on July 2, 1960 at ST Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro. They made their home in Gaston until 1965 when they bought their home behind Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort.
Art worked at Williams Controls for over thirty years until retiring. He helped manufacture air valves and electronic throttles for trucks and heavy equipment.
He enjoyed his family and playing with his grandchildren. He was an avid gardener, was a master storyteller and volunteered many hours as a groundskeeper for his church, Visitation Catholic Church. He was an avid Steelhead fisherman and spent many decades on the Wilson River fishing. Art was an avid supporter of Alcoholics Anonymous sponsoring many members over the years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, six siblings: Ervin(Bud) Vanderzanden, Elmer Vanderzanden, Meleta Kadell, Viola Vanderzanden, Eve Youst, Richard Vanderzanden and grandchild Nadaya Jastad.
He is survived by his loving wife, Pat, eleven children and their spouses: Blaine Vanderzanden of Hillsboro, Ron Vanderzanden of Hillsboro, Curt and Connie Vanderzanden of Warren, Brand and Lori Vanderzanden of Forest Grove, Derek Vanderzanden of Forest Grove, Jason Vanderzanden of Forest Grove, Danielle and Chris Cook of Forest Grove, Joel and Marti Vanderzanden of Portland, Rachelle Vanderzanden and her spouse Nick Klaumann of Portland, Josh Vanderzanden of Forest Grove, two siblings: Virginia Hendricks and Agnes Richardson 12 Grandchildren, 2 Great Grandchildren.
