Curtiss "Odie" Eugene Vanderzanden
Obituary
Curtiss "Odie" Eugene Vanderzanden, 75, a resident of the Hillsboro community passed away on Monday morning, July 3, 2017 at Providence St Vincent Medical Center in Portland.
Curt was born on December 15, 1941 in Forest Grove, OR. He was the oldest of two children born to Daniel and Rosie (Paulsen) Vanderzanden. He was raised on the family farm in Roy and attended St. Francis Catholic Grade School. He attended Banks High School graduating with the Class of 1959.
He enlisted in the US Army after high school and served his country, stationed in Germany until 1961 when he was honorably discharged.
Curt met his wife, Carolyn Delplanche, while working a summer job at the cannery. They soon began dating and four years later they were married on September 30, 1967 at Verboort, OR. They made their home in Orenco until 1972 when they moved to their current home in Hillsboro.
He had worked as a Boilermaker for NW Marine Iron Works for over 30 years. He helped build, weld, remodel and repair barges, cruise ships and many US Navy ships.
He was a devoted father to his three children; Steven, Jeffery and Linda. Curt liked to take the family to the beach where they beach combed for drift wood and rocks. They went clam digging and camped at the beach on weekends. He was also an expert scavenger and used this skill to help contractors clean up construction sites. Odie loved garage sales, Goodwill and thrift stores. He listened to Old Country Western music, he always raised a large vegetable garden and belonged to a bowling league for many years. Odie was most noted for his one liner jokes that he endlessly told to anyone, whether they wanted to hear them or not.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffery Vanderzanden, his parents and two granddaughters, Crystal and Samantha Jo Vanderzanden.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; two children and their spouses, Steven and Michelle Vanderzanden of North Plains; Linda and Kevin Sahlfeld of Cornelius and their daughters, Riley and Carmen; a sister, Dorothy Lewis of Soap Lake, WA and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
The family suggests donations in Curt’s name to any of the following: Visitation Cemetery, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital or the Tualatin Valley Garden Club.
