MARTIN JOSEPH VANDERZANDEN was born November 27, 1905 at Verboort, Oregon, the son of the late William.P. Vanderzanden and Mary Vandervelden Vanderzanden. He was raised and received his education in the Verboort School. Upon completing his education he went to work in the farming community.
He was united in marriage to Mary Vanderschuere on October 16, 1928 at the Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort. They celebrated their 56th Year Wedding Anniversary this past October. Following their marriage they resided at Verboort, having taken over the operation of his parents farm. While operating the farm he also worked for the Burlingham Seed Company, where he was a seed cleaner. He also worked for the Lydia Logging Company. Then in 1955 he retired from the farm and went to work for the Jesuit High School in Beaverton, where he worked as a maintainence person. He worked for the school for fourteen years before retiring in 1969. They sold their home in Verboort in 1984 and moved to their present home in Forest Grove.
Mr. Vanderzanden was a life member of the Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Among his special interests he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Vanderzanden died on Monday, April 22, 1985 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, following an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the family home in Forest Grove, Oregon; two sons, Donald Vanderzanden, of Hillsboro, Oregon; and Howard Vanderzanden, of Cornelius, Oregon; and one daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Dorothy) Jansen, of Gaston, Oregon.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Darwin Jansen, of Forest Grove, Oregon; and Carl c. and Crista Vanderzanden, both of Cornelius, Oregon; and two great-grandchildren, Lindsay Renee' Jansen and Robert Cook; and one niece, Veleta Mullin, of Portland, Oregon.
