Virginia was born on November 10, 1920 on her parents farm in North Plains, OR. She was the third oldest of four children born to Antone "Tone" and Antonette "Nettie" (Hermens) Sohler. She was raised on the family farm and attended Columbia Academy (in North Plains) through the eighth grade.

She met her future husband, Norman Vanderzanden, while he was working as the postman. They soon began dating and they were married on October 8, 1947 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro. They made their home in Shady Brook for a few years and then moved to Verboort in 1954 were they raised their family. On May 1, 1998 Norman passed away and Virginia continued to live in her home until 2008 when she moved into assisted living in Forest Grove.

Virginia was first and foremost a loving and devoted mother to her five children, Mary Ann, Jane, Norma, Alice and Albert. She enjoyed her family immensely and would often visit or have them over for dinner. She liked being "Grandma" and filled this role by providing christening quilts to most all of her grandchildren. She was also an avid gardener an expert baker and candy maker.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Norman, her parents and three siblings; Harold Sohler, Genevieve Kemper and SR. Bernadette Ann Sohler.

She is survived by her five children; Mary Ann Motoh of Daly City, CA. Jane Kindel of Mountaindale, Norma Hill of Forest Grove, Alice Schmidlin of Banks, OR, Albert Vanderzanden of Verboort, fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The family suggest donations in Virginia's name to Vital Life Foundation, 4560 SE International Way, Ste.100, Milwaukie, OR 97222 or Visitation Catholic Church Altar Society.
