Christina Kay VanDyke
Obituary
Christina Kay VanDyke, 77, a resident of the Cornelius community, passed away on October 28, 2024, at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
Kay was born on September 5, 1947, in Lebanon, Missouri. She was the beloved daughter of Clona and Frieda (Jensen) Goans, and the second of three children. Kay cherished her siblings, Klona and Roger, as well as her half-siblings from her parents' previous marriages, Owen, Georgia, Bud, Marilyn, Delores, and Charlene. In 2008 they were reunited with their brother, Tom.
Kay was raised in Missouri until the age of four, when her family moved to Oregon. She graduated from Forest Grove High School with the Class of 1965, and after high school, Kay was able to attend Oregon College of Education.
Kay met her future husband, Norman VanDyke, when the two were in 4th grade together at Cornelius Grade School. After a friendship and a long courtship, they were married on December 20, 1969, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They made their first home together in Beaverton, and raised their family in Aloha before retiring to their hometown, Cornelius. Together, they had three sons, Thomas (Tom), Phillip (Kip), and Brandon.
Kay was a homemaker until Brandon was in high school, when she began working for Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District as a Sports Clerk.
Kay enjoyed reading and writing and could write the most amazing stories and poetry. She also enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping trips to the lake and an occasional ride in a boat, as long as it had oars, and not a motor. Kay loved watching her boys play sports and was the scorekeeper for many years. She was pivotal in keeping the rules straight for the Western Washington County Junior Baseball Organization.
Her seven grandchildren lovingly called her Yaya. She enjoyed doting on them very much, and attended many of their sporting events, concerts, and plays. She was known for her “Yaya cookies” and frequently brought them tubs of cookies to enjoy.
She is survived by her loving husband Norm, sons, Tom (and wife Erin) VanDyke of Hillsboro, Kip (and wife Maureen) VanDyke of Cornelius, Brandon (and wife Sara) VanDyke of Tualatin; seven grandchildren, David, Athena, Aidan, Quinten, Irene, Sofie, and Laurel; sister Klona Mannen; brothers, Walter (Bud) Fones and Thomas Diehl; and many nieces and nephews.
