Eunice Marie VanDyke, 100, of the Forest Grove community passed away on August 7, 2017 at Silver Cloud Adult Foster Home

A Rosary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Visitation Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Visitation Catholic. A graveside service will be held at Visitation Catholic Cemetery on Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

Eunice was born on May 22, 1917 in Verboort, OR. She was the only child born to Edward and Lena (Hermens) VanDeHey. Edward remarried and she got two half sisters, Martha Verboort and Eileen Jansen. Eunice grew up on the family farm and attended school in Verboort but her education was cut short after losing her mom and then her stepmom at a very young age. She was needed at home to operate the farm while her dad took outside jobs.

Eunice met her future husband while in grade school. After high school, Clarence “Jeff” and Eunice were united in marriage on November 29, 1939 in Verboort, OR. They bought a farm on Evers Road where she lived until three years ago. She raised six wonderful children on the farm. Charlie and Vicki purchased the farm after Jeff retired and continue to work and live on the farm. They retired from farming in 1976. On October 29, 2005 Jeff passed away.

To know Eunice was to like her. She was a lifelong member of the Visitation Catholic Church and the church organist for many years while Jeff was the choir leader. She loved her farm and took part in all farming chores, especially in the raising and exhibiting of her Ayrshires. Eunice was multi-talented. She enjoyed painting, sewing, needlework and flower gardening. Her bird identification book was always within arm’s reach. She was handy in the kitchen, too. Her apple pie took first place at the first Washington County Fair Apple Pie Contest. But her family already knew her pies were the tops.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jeff, parents, son, Charles VanDyke, sisters, Eileen Jansen and Martha Verboort.

Eunice is survived by her children, Jacquelyn & Don Hanson of Whittier, CA, Nicholas & Sharrie VanDyke of Cornelius, OR, Fredrick & Laurelen VanDyke of Buxton, OR, Vicki & Charles Hertel of Verboort, and Jeff VanDyke of Troutdale, OR,  daughter-in-law, Judy VanDyke of LaGrande, OR, 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests donations in Eunice’s name be made to the Visitation School Building Fund.
