VERNON ALBERT JANSEN was born January 10, 1930 on the family farm in Verboort, Oregon. He was the son of the late Albert Jansen and Dora VanDyke Jansen. He was raised and received his education in Verboort, having graduated from the Verboort High School. Upon completing his schooling he went to work for the Vanaken Sand and Gravel Company in Forest Grove where he drove truck. He drove for the company until joining the United States Army in 1951. Mr. Jansen served in the Army until 1953 when he was discharged, having served six months of his enlistment in Germany. While still in the service he was united in marriage to Dorothy VanderZanden of Verboort, on March 30, 1951 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. They celebrated their 34th Year Wedding Anniversary this past March. Following their marriage they resided at Fort Jackson until his discharge. They then returned to Oregon, settling in Forest Grove. Mr. Jansen returned to work for the Vanaken Sand and Gravel Company in Forest Grove. He worked for them until 1955 when he went to work for the McCready Lumber Company in Forest Grove. He worked for the lumber company until September of 1972 when he went into business with the Convoy Transportation Company. Mr. Jansen was in the car transportation business until he suffered a stroke in March of 1984. Mr. Jansen was a lifetime member of the catholic faith having been a member of the Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort and the St. John's Catholic Church in Gaston. Among his special interests he enjoyed his family life and he had a special love for hunting and fishing. Mr. Jansen died Thursday evening, July 25, 1985 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, following an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of the family home in Scoggins Valley, Oregon; one son, Darwin Jansen, of Forest Grove, Oregon; four brothers, Maurice Jansen, of Banks, Oregon; Gervase Jansen, Larry Jansen and Wilbur "Pete" Jansen, all of Forest Grove, Oregon; and two sisters, Arlene Herinckx, of Forest Grove, Oregon; and Martha Eberly, of Veneta, Oregon. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Lindsay Renee Jansen and Robert H. Cook, both of Forest Grove, Oregon. Mr. Jansen was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Hafner in March of 1985.
